Between 1995 and 1999, Helen Sjöholm delivered the performance of a lifetime at the Malmö Opera, playing the role of Kristina in Björn & Benny’s musical Kristina från Duvemåla. The role served as her major breakthrough.
Now, she returns to the Malmö Opera stage to take on her first lead role there since Kristina. This time, she steps into the role of former silent film star Norma Desmond in the musical Sunset Boulevard.
The musical will be performed between September 10, 2027, and April 2, 2028.
– Finally, I get to perform a role on the main stage at Malmö Opera again – after longing to return there for 26 years. Taking on the role of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard is going to be exciting. Diving into narcissism, obsession, desperation, and a thirst for revenge – all set to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s grand music, alongside director Emma Bucht, a large ensemble, and Malmö Opera’s excellent orchestra – feels like a dream, says Helen in a press release.
Sunset Boulevard is written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and is based on a 1950 Hollywood movie. The musical premiered in the UK in 1993. The director of the production at the Malmö Opera is Emma Bucht.
