Helen Sj\u00f6holm shone like the evening sun in the City Hall Park. Folk ballads, for children and for adults, alternated with pop songs, musical numbers and a little dance music.<\/p>\n

Helen Sj\u00f6holm has made her name as the keeper of one of the best voices in the country. She could easily have been content to travel around and show off beautiful singing, but wants more than that. The lyrics are just as much in focus as the melodies when Helen Sj\u00f6holm chooses material.<\/p>\n

Only by singing songs with words that mean something can she show which at the same time temperamental and heartfelt interpreter she is. At the same time, she has a penchant for the slightly coarse. I\u2019m not thinking of Olle Adolphson\u2019s tender \u201cSiv och Gunne\u201d with \u201cFor a kid\u201d. Rather more about Sj\u00f6holm\u2019s sometimes slightly indecent small talk.
\nWith her on stage she has a super professional band with legendary Jojje Wadenius on guitar. Equally comfortable in Billy Joel interpretations as Shakespeare\u2019s sonnets set to music by keyboardist Martin \u00d6stergren. Sj\u00f6holm promises early on that the evening will offer something for everyone and the promise is fulfilled. It could be sprawling, but doesn\u2019t feel that way.<\/p>\n

To have time for everything they want to do the ensemble puts together several medleys. First one where they dive deep into the Swedish folk ballad archive and come out with, among other things, \u201dV\u00e5rvindar friska\u201d \u201dH\u00e4r \u00e4r gudagott att vara\u201d and \u201dVid vassen av den kr\u00f6kta str\u00f6m\u201d. This along with a medley of nursery rhymes from Wadenius\u2019 Goda\u2019goda\u2018 are two highlights.
\nMore unexpected numbers like \u201cVeronica\u201d by Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney, are followed up by \u201cmust songs\u201d like \u201cGabriellas s\u00e5ng\u201d \u201cDu m\u00e5ste finnas\u201d and Swedish chart record holder, \u201cDu \u00e4r min man\u201d who got every man and woman in the audience to clap along.<\/p>\n

Best of all was probably still \u201cV\u00e5rens f\u00f6rsta dag\u201d, the Swedish version of Laleh\u2019s \u201cSome die young.\u201d What Sj\u00f6holm lacks in liveliness compared to the original she weighs up with something that must be described as sincerity. That hits home!<\/p>\n
