After Wadenius’ initial maneuver Helen Sj\u00f6holm enters the stage and gives us a Swedish version of Joni Mitchell’s “Both sides now” followed closely by Eva Dahlgren’s “Glad och lycklig”. Then we get to tonight’s only rhymed smalltalk, where both Berg and Mantorp are mentioned. The local winsk are popular with the audience and the performers for the evening have us all in their palm.
\nHelen Sj\u00f6holm and her backing band move effortlessly among genres. Here’s musical repertoire, songs of Billy Joel and Elvis Costello and the all too soon deceased Judee Sill but also a potpourri of old Swedish songs. Of course we get to hear “Du m\u00e5ste finnas” from Bj\u00f6rn and Benny’s “Kristina fr\u00e5n Duvem\u00e5la”. But also “Bortom sol och m\u00e5ne” from the musical “Hj\u00e4lp s\u00f6kes” which was played at the Orion Theatre just a year ago.The treasure that Helen Sj\u00f6holm’s unearthed in the Swedish song archive are well worth listening to. Helen Sj\u00f6holm stands out among our popular singers because she doesn’t write songs herself. She interprets other people’s songs with both heart and soul and her voice seems to have no range limits at all. It sounds playfully simple and the unpretentiousness and naturalness recur in the smalltalk between songs. It’s friendly and inviting, both to her fellow musicians and to us in the audience. You simply sit and enjoy a perfect start of the weekend.<\/p>\n
