Now they are on stage together for the first time. In the pocket musical Someone has to do it, they are tasked with sorting out the chaos in a library basement – but behind the mess lies a larger political story.

– We have always been each other’s competitors. Either I or Gunilla play the role that exists for this type of woman, or someone else of course. That’s why we have never worked together before, says Helen Sjöholm.

In Someone Has to Do It, the audience meets Kassandra and Felicia, two women who are tasked with creating order out of the chaos in an old library basement. Gunilla Backman plays the role of Felicia, a cheerful type who likes to talk first and think later – but who quietly carries a sadness.

Helen Sjöholm plays Kassandra, a role inspired by the woman with the same name from Greek mythology, who was given the ability to see into the future by the god Apollo.

– She has also gained the ability to see and is tormented by the fact that no one believes her premonitions. She is a misunderstood and lonely person.

It all started with Gunilla Backman, who contacted Helen Sjöholm with an idea to work together. Soon Sissela Kyle was also on board as a director. Per Naroskin then joined as a screenwriter.

– We are a dream team, I feel. You almost have to pinch yourself, says Gunilla Backman.

– As an artist, you rarely get to start your own projects, but often wait for producers. Here we have stepped in as co-producers and have been involved in the entire creative process, says Helen Sjöholm.

The duo interprets songs by famous Swedish artists, including Abba and Ebba Grön. The performance is also characterized by a serious and political undertone.

The two women constantly receive new directives from the steering group about what should be cleared out or kept on the shelves. Gradually, they begin to sense a pattern.

– We start to question and realize that it is about censorship. In the end, we revolt – it is civil courage. At the same time, we get to know each other and accept our differences, says Gunilla Backman.

(…)

(The entire article is not reproduced for copyright reasons)

Back

Dagens Nyheter 2025-09-26 By: MOLLY NAGY EKENDAHL Helen Sjöholm and Gunilla Backman have long competed for the same roles.
